Welcome to Down Syndrome Talks™  A blog where we can share our experiences, tips, and ideas to help each other.  In this first blog post I would like to introduce myself, tell you about my vision, and ask you to join me.
I am the mother of a teenage daughter with Down syndrome.  As a parent of a child with Down syndrome I want the best for Hannah as I’m sure you do for your child or student.  Being a speech-language pathologist has given me the professional perspective to add to my parental perspective.
Giving our children the best starts with figuring out their needs.  Sourcing or developing materials.  Thinking outside the box.  Asking myself, “What is it I need to do to enable learning?”  Hannah has flourished with teaching that has met her where she is, using her strengths to develop skills that are more challenging.  I have learned LOTS from Hannah and from every child with Down syndrome I work with.

My vision is for us to share our knowledge with each other.  I have lots of ideas to share with you and will present them here on Down Syndrome Talks™.  These are some of the topics I will cover:
  • The learning profile of people with Down syndrome.
  • Most effective teaching practices.
  • Speech development.
  • What language skills to teach.
  • How to use print support.
  • Reading and spelling development.
  • Expectations.
  • Resources.

Our children deserve the best in education and health care.  They deserve to receive the support they need to reach their full potential.
Let’s join together, share our knowledge and create possibilities.   Please share in the Comments what topic ideas, or specific questions you have for Down Syndrome Talks.
