Fizzy Water:  the easy way to hydration.

Dehydration is a big problem for many people with Down syndrome.  Many just don't want to drink enough fluid.  Lack of fluid intake can lead to health issues.  Often the biggest concern is constipation.  
​But dehydration also contributes to dry skin, fatigue, headaches, bad breath and weight gain.  
Are you often encouraging your loved one with Down syndrome to drink more?  And they take just one sip, or only want to drink a sugar-filled beverage?  We know sweet beverages are not the answer as they contribute to obesity.  So what is the answer?

Many years ago our family got on the fizzy water kick.  Instead of soft drinks, soda or pop, we had club soda in the house.  Club soda has always been a treat for our children.  It's especially good cold.  What I have realized in the last few years is that our daughter with Down syndrome, Hannah, stays hydrated.  She loves fizzy water and drinks lots of it.  We don't have to push fluids.  She keeps herself hydrated.

Fizzy water is apparently a great thirst quencher as well, as reported in this study.

Fizzy water can be plain (club soda) or naturally flavoured like LaCroix sparkling water, or PC Blue Menu sparkling water.  Be sure to check the ingredient list to avoid any sugar, glucose-fructose, aspartame, etc.  You may also want to avoid any added salt (sodium).  
The ingredients in club soda are carbonated water, or water and carbon dioxide.  The ingredients in both the LaCroix and PC Blue Menu sparkling water are carbonated water and natural flavour.
